Marilyn Barrett specializes in corporate and tax transactions and tax controversy matters, emphasizing business formation, partnership and limited liability company agreements, mergers and acquisitions and tax administrative proceedings.

She received her B.S. in Accounting with highest distinction from the University of Kansas in 1973 and her J.D. from UCLA in 1977, where she was an Associate Editor of the UCLA Law Review.  Marilyn is a Certified Public Accountant.   Marilyn is a former Chair of the Taxation Section of the State Bar of California and of the Los Angeles County Bar Association.

Marilyn has been active in community affairs.  She is the immediate past President of the Board of Directors of The Los Angeles Free Clinic and continues to serve on its Board.  She also serves on the Board of the Youth Mentoring Connection, the Advisory Board of the Los Angeles Commission On Assaults Against Women, and on the Women’s’ Leadership Board, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.  Throughout her legal career, she has provided pro bono legal services to more than 20 charitable organizations to assist them in securing tax-exempt status.
Marilyn has also received numerous awards.  She was honored by the 2000 Women of Achievement Award in Law given by the Century City Chamber of Commerce.  In 1987, she received a Humanitarian Award from the Los Angeles Commission On Assaults Against Women and, in 1993, she received a Commendation from the Los Angeles County Commission on the Status of Women for her work with victims of sexual assault.

Marilyn has authored more than 40 articles for legal journals and is the contributing editor on Federal Taxation for the CEB California Business Law Reporter.   The Ten Biggest Legal Mistakes Women Can Avoid and the new version, Just Sign Here Honey:  Women’s 10 Biggest Mistakes & How To Avoid Them is her first book for a general audience.
